Breast milk different for boys and girls says UW

Breast milk it amazing! I've said it before and I'll say it again! Woman's bodies produce the perfect food for their children!

Different breast milk for boys and girls says University of Washington - Seattle breastfeeding | Examiner.com

According to a new article in Nature (Dec 23/30), breast milk produced for boys contains more protein and fat than breast milk produced for girls.
“We know that boys grow faster than girls, and perhaps this is due to the milk, or the milk may be responding to the commands of the child,” said Ginna Wall, coordinator of lactation services at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.

I feel so fortunate that I was able to breastfeed by boys for as long as they needed!

Wrapping with fabric

I love this video from Celebrate Green! It shows how quick and simple it can be to wrap your gifts with fabric! There is also a chart that gives ideas on wrapping different shaped items. No waste with fabric, use it over and over, wash it and no tape (or scissors ;-)  needed!

I have one roll of holiday paper left that was purchased a few years back, and then I'm going to start using fabric for all of my gifts....I'm thinking about hitting the fabric store after the holidays to look for end-bolt pieces to use!

I love ecampus.com

Here is a quote from ecampus.com, a great company that sells textbooks at great prices. "In the spirit of the holiday season, the folks here at eCampus.com remind you of our commitment to our global community by sponsoring clean water projects in underdeveloped nations. Thanks for helping us help others this year!"

Cheap Textbooks | Used Textbooks | Textbook Rental | Sell Textbooks | eTextbooks

Here is a link to how they help out around the world! If you need to buy textbooks, this is a great place to get them! You can rent buy, or sell your textbooks at ecampus and you get free shipping if you spend $59 or more!

I just bought my husbands textbooks here for next quarter and I got a great deal and free shipping!

Thinking about the spring garden......already!

Here is a great article from Mother Earth News.

Vertical Gardening Techniques for Maximum Returns - Organic Gardening - MOTHER EARTH NEWS

It really makes me excited for spring to get here so I can get out in the garden and get started! Yes, I know, winter is only 2 days old.....but I know that January is coming and spring planting time will be nipping at it's heels!

I'm going to start planning the planting layout for my garden beds soon!

Here are my boys with some of the early radishes from the garden the year before last!

We have 3 simple rectangular raised beds made from untreated cedar. We are planning to build one more bed this spring for a total of 4 beds! The sizes of the raised beds are  4'x8',  5'x10' and 6'x12'. The 5'x10' is my favorite size.....the 6'x12' is a little bit big, but they didn't  have any of the 10' boards in and I didn't want to waste any of the wood, so we just went with the larger size.

This is a very simple plan for making a raised bed. You just buy 3 untreated cedar boards 8 or 10 feet long by 8-12 inches wide. Cut one in half and use long nails to attach the four pieces together. I dug up all of the sod where I was going to place the frame. We ordered garden soil and filled the beds with a mix of garden soil, compost and composted chicken and steer manure. I have an easy method for composting all of my non-cooked, non-meat, kitchen waste, which I will write a post about later. :-)

I also have a bed along the fence behind the raised beds that has raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, and strawberries. We also have an Italian Plum tree, a Liberty Apple Tree, a grafted apple tree with 4 or 5 different grafts, a grafted pear with 4 grafts, and an Asian Pear tree. I'm considering possibly putting in a filbert tree this spring (if I can make room) as well as more blueberries.

When you have a small space to garden in, I agree with Mother Earth News that growing vertically can be a way to expand your garden bounty and make the best use of your space! I have used a trellis of sorts with my peas and beans made out of stakes and hemp twine.

But I really like the idea of using rigid livestock panels to make an arched growing surface between two beds! I think it would enhance the looks of your garden space as well as making use of the area between your beds! Not to mention it should last for a good long time!

I hope I've gotten you excited to start planning your garden now! It's the perfect time to do it when there is not much else to do in the yard!

Emile Pandolfi - one of my favorite pianists.... :-)

One of my all time favorite pianists is Emile Pandolfi. I have several of his cd's including a couple of his holiday albums. You can listen to some of his music on his website!

He is absolutely amazing! Here are some performance excerpts. If you love to hear the piano, and hear it played well, you will absolutely love him! Not to mention, he can be kind of funny too!

8 - 10 year olds announce Bumble Bee breakthrough in scientific journal Biology Letters Today

As a homeschooling mom, I love seeing kids learn! These kids were given a great opportunity and probably feel very accomplished! Hopefully this will set at least a few of them on the track to become scientists of some sort!

This just emphasizes the need for all children to be given opportunities to discover science through creative scientific experimentation! The students at this school were guided by their teacher as well as neuroscientist  Dr. Beau Lotto

I think the most important discovery made, was that the researchers in this experiment "also discovered that science is cool and fun because you get to do stuff that no one has ever done before". That in itself is the key to learning!

Hiking.....

Last night my husband and I watched this National Geographic video about hiking the Appalachian Trail. It was a great documentary and very inspiring! We've always planned to travel when we retire.....but now we are ditching the RV to hike both the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails! I guess that means both of us need to work harder at staying in shape NOW!

Maybe we will even be able to do one or the other with the kids when they are a little older!

This is just a short clip, but you can see the whole thing on Netflix - watch instantly!

Now it's got me itching to go hiking! I can't wait until spring rolls around so that we can get out and do some!
